Iaido

Through researching Iaido, I learned much as I am unfamiliar to much of the martial arts world. This Japanese Martial Art is very unique, as it's emphasis relies not on the action of combat, but in the initial technique and discipline of four components that produce effective combat: Nukitsuke, Kiritsuke, Chiburi, and Noto. Nukitsuke (抜き付け）is the motion of drawing and cutting with the blade, and the fundamental piece of Iaido. The overall goal with this action is to execute the draw and cut smoothly and efficiently. Following this is Kiritsuke (切り付け）, which is the focus on "finishing the cut". Proficient movement with this action requires the practitioner to demonstrate fluidity and control over the movement in ensuring the blade is returned to it's scabbard. Chiburi(ちぶり）is the act of cleaning the blood from the blade, pertaining symbolically to cleansing the blade to prepare it for what comes next. The final component, Noto(のと）, is the re-sheathing of the blade to it's scabbard. This final motion further displays the control and precision required of Iaido. Together, these aspects work together to formulate the complex principles of Iaido, which include mindfulness, discipline, and the ability to respond with control and deliberate actions against threat. The art is also considered a spiritual and mental discipline, as practitioners must be very aware and focused. With a plethora of crisp actions, techniques, and motions, combined with much spiritual and mental skill, this art is very well respected--and remains alive in Japanese culture today.
